Why protect asylum applications?
Asylum applications have very personal information, like details about history and legal case. If leaked, it could put you at risk or harm your case. Keeping this information private is essential to ensure the applicant’s safety and protect their rights.
Can't I just email an asylum application?
Emailing an asylum application without security could expose personal details to the wrong people. Protect this sensitive information with strong encryption to ensure the applicant’s safety and privacy.
How sensitive is the data in an asylum application?
Based on our analysis of potential risk factors, we've given asylum applications a sensitivity rating of 70 out of 100.
Data at risk:

* How do we calculate sensitivity ratings?
We calculate sensitivity ratings based on the type, volume, and potential misuse of the information contained in each document.
Here’s how it works:
Type of Information
Documents containing highly sensitive details—such as personal identifiers, financial data, legal records, or biometric information—receive higher ratings.
Volume of Sensitive Information
The more sensitive details a document contains, the higher the score. For example, a tax document with extensive personal and financial data scores higher than a single-page appraisal.
Likelihood and Impact of Misuse
Documents that pose a greater risk if intercepted—like credit card details or bank statements—receive higher ratings. We also consider the consequences of a breach, such as fraud or identity theft.
Audience and Context
Some documents, like asylum applications or legal case files, are rated higher due to the severe personal, professional, or legal consequences of exposure.
Scoring Scale
85–100: Highly sensitive, with significant risk if exposed (e.g., credit card details, biometric data).
70–84: Moderately sensitive, containing private or exploitable information (e.g., tax documents, bank statements).
Below 70: Lower sensitivity, but still requiring secure handling (e.g., property appraisals).
This method ensures our sensitivity ratings accurately reflect the level of protection needed for each document type.
